With the Toulon 2 jacket being my introduction to the Belgium manufacturer I was immediately taken by the premium look and feel. With the reassuring weight that only a leather jacket can seem to provide.
The jacket is littered with well thought out utility functions such as zip & button cuffs, button adjustable waist line, plentiful pockets including an additional internal large ‘phone pocket’ itself with easy to open velcro top rather than the quality YKK zips used elsewhere. The jacket is remarkably flexible and noticeably less restricting than other jackets on the market. This I put down to the fact the jacket is made using Buffalo leather, a superior offering than standard cow in both suppleness and strength. This suppleness is improved with the level 1 D30 armour fitted to the elbows, shoulders and back which although offering less overall protection than level 2 is itself more malleable. The armour is upgradable to level 2 of however you wished to improve the safety at the expense of some ease of movement. The jacket with the level one armour fitted is AA rated.
The hood is detachable again by another quality YKK zip which is kept away from irritating your neck by another supple piece of buffalo leather. This thoughtful approach to possible ‘touch point’ irritant areas is also present internally where the base of your arm pit meets the arm of the jacket.
Externally as well as the various feature stitch details the brands name and logo are also neatly and proudly embossed.
Overall this is a product that feels as though it that could be handed down through a biking families generations, more than likely improving with age as it does. This isn’t something that can be often felt these days and although at £399 the Toulon 2 jacket is firmly placed at the higher end of the market it’s quality and useful lifespan for me make it very good value for money.
